Greetings all… It has been a very long time since I have written for you… about two and a half months ago! I hope to resume writing my column with this First Sunday of Lent.
So often during Lent we ask each other “What have you given up for Lent?” Many of us might say chocolate and sweets, others might say social media and complaining. As I pondered what I may give up or, fast from, this Lent it occurred to me with the pandemic raging on after 11 months what more could we give up? Many of us have been living a type of Lent for nearly a year as we refrain from going to restaurants, movie theaters, visiting family and traveling on vacation. And most devastating of all– many of us are unable to gather together at the Lord’s table. I doubt many of us will give up chocolate this Lent as it is what is keeping many of us going! For me I think I will “give up” some of my time rather than chocolate and spend time reflecting upon what has seemed like the “longest Lent ever.”
During Jesus’ time in the desert I am sure he did not just focus upon his suffering, thirst and starvation. He must have pondered his blessings as well as his father’s purpose for sending him into the desert for 40 days and nights. I invite you to begin our sacred and divine Lenten season to reflect upon the past year and spend time with Jesus examining the past year— finding the small joys that have kept you going these many months. Where have you seen Jesus at work in these times?
Lent leads us to a journey to the Cross and the Resurrection. We know hope is on the horizon and that hope lies with Jesus, faith in him and the love we have for each other.
Peace be with you… Holly
