Mass with Ashes at 12:00 noon at Sacred Heart;
Mass with Ashes at 6:00 p.m. at Saints Martha & Mary.
There is no 8:00 a.m. daily Mass at Saints Martha & Mary. Ashes will be blessed at the altar and then “repent and believe in the gospel” said just once. Ashes will be distributed with a long swab for each person in attendance. Clergy will be available after the Mass at Sacred Heart only for any who are unable to attend the Mass due to the capacity restrictions. Bags with ashes will be available for those at home after the Mass.
Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting.
The Stations of the Cross will be Live-Streamed on Facebook from St. Isidore on the Fridays of Lent at 6pm.
The Stations of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ's last day on Earth as a man. The 14 devotions, or stations, focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation. The stations are commonly used as a mini pilgrimage as the individual moves from station to station. At each station, the individual recalls and meditates on a specific event from Christ's last day. Specific prayers are recited, then the individual moves to the next station until all 14 are complete.
Abstinence -- Catholics over 14 years of age are bound to the obligation of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be used at all.
Fast -- Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of fasting. On these days, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed.
Regarding other weekdays of Lent, participation in daily Mass and the voluntary observance of fasting is recommended.
Commendable, particularly during Lent, is generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing our abundance, the traditional Lenten Devotions and all the self-denial summed up in the Christian concept of “mortification.”
Every Monday and Thursday during Lent from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Saints Martha & Mary
